Vade - Self-titled cassette

Vade was the band that most of the members of The Blood Brothers were in prior to starting that band. They had three releases that I know of: a 7" called Saturn, a 12" split with Jough Dawn Baker and this here Self-titled cassette tape released on Henry's Finest. I lost my original copy of this thing years ago and had been searching for a replacement copy ever since. Thankfully though, last year someone let me know they were auctioning off a copy on ebay and I was able to get my grubby little hands on it.

Today's download features 10 blasts of hardcore homoerotic hesher punk from Seattle's infamous Tit Pig. These tracks are from their sole release, a very limited edition cassette that came out sometime last Spring/Summer. Apparently these guys broke up a little while back. Here are some fond memories people shared over on The Stranger's website:

Happy New Year! Sorry I've been lazy about updating this thing lately. The holidays can be a real pain in the ass and this year was just so rushed & stressful I've barely had time for anything important, let alone ripping records and updating the blog. Thankfully though we're entering in to the home stretch and, as 2011 draws to a close, it's time for the last post of the year and what could be better for that than a blast of snotty old school sounding punk rock.

The Briefs have been making noise since forming in Seattle in the year 2000. Their sound has always stayed very true to the poppier side of the '77 punk style, sort of similar to: The Vibrators, The Buzzcocks or maybe even a less abrasive version Blanks 77. They dropped this chunk of wax in 2002 and I believe I picked it up at Singles Going Steady sometime shortly thereafter.

Hollywood Mike Miranda (bio taken from their myspace page): "Formed in 2000 over some beers at the Cha Cha in Seattle, Washington. Within two weeks the band had two singers, a guitarist, a drummer and a bass player. 6 weeks later the first show was played. We were dead by fall and had a series of shows over winter break. Between April-August 2000 and December 20, 2000-January 5(?) 2001 we played approximately 18 shows. It was fun."

The Cripples - So Tired 7"

"Seattle synth-punk revivalists The Cripples formed in 1994. The band's formula began with a standard electric bass and drums that were fronted by two singing synth players. Over the years they incorporated guitars at times and a whole variety of mobile, hacked, modified, and even toy plastic keyboards. Early punk bands that used synthesizers like The Screamers were a major influence on The Cripples. The band pre-dated the more recent wave synth bands like The Epoxies and certainly has never been as polished or commercial as their contemporaries, there is a unique sound and raw edge to most Cripples songs, which I'd credit to both the vocal style and the the hacked up and homemade keyboards." Sicko / Mr T. Experience - Split 7"

Sicko were a glorious pop punk trio from Seattle that existed from the early to the late 90's. One of the first club shows I ever went to was when I got to go see Sicko open for Gas Huffer at the old Pioneer Square Theater in downtown Seattle. I had initially gone to the show solely for the Huffer but Sicko really blew me away with their short quick pop bursts. I also remember thinking that it was really cool when co-frontmen Ean and Denny traded bass and guitar duties halfway through their set. Today's download is a blast of pure pop punk joy, one of my favorite Sicko tracks entitled 80 Dollars, coupled with the track Together Tonight by The Mr T. Experience, a band that hail from Berkeley, CA.

I honestly don't know much about the band Homo Eradicus. I learned of them through the Is It... Dead? Northwest Hardcore compilation that came out in 2001 and featured bands like Raft of Dead Monkeys and Botch (speaking of which, if anyone out there has a cd copy of Is It... Dead? that they could hook me up with a rip of, that would be awesome). While they're just as aggressive and screamy as you'd expect from the local hardcore bands of the era, musically Homo Eradicus definitely fall to the slightly more technical side of the pile. Homo Eradicus featured members of Akimbo and Teen Cthulhu and singer Dylan Sharp went on to play in the Olympia based punk rock band Gun Outfit.

Today's download contains two Rat Cat Hogan albums that were released as a single cassette on Elsinor records. I got my copy for free from the band at a show they played with Peter Parker down in Olympia, probably in 1999. Both sides have the same great quirky songs you'd expect from these guys but the Don't Call Me Twaddy side of this tape is probably my favorite of all of their recorded output. The two albums have been separated into individual downloads.

Shoplifting arose from the ashes of the first incarnation of Chromatics, who themselves had risen out of the remnants of The Vogue & Soiled Doves. Composed of members Hannah Blilie (drums/vocals), Melissa Lock (bass), Chris Pugmire (guitar/vocals) & Devin Welch (guitar/keyboards), Shoplifting pick up the post punk torch left behind by their former bands, though Shoplifting definitely has a more dance feel than Soiled Doves or Chromatics ever had. They released one album, Body Stories, and one EP before the members moved on to other projects such as The Gossip and Past Lives.

Mocket - Pro Forma

Mocket's third and final album, Pro Forma, was released in 1999 and is a significant change in sound from their earlier releases. This time around Mocket's core duo of Matt & Audrey teamed up with The Need's Rachel Carns & Radio Sloan and the results are definitely less Mocket's trademark new wave synth pop and more akin to The Need's take on cracked out no wave art rock. Since Mocket disbanded, Matt Steinke, also known for his work with Satisfact, went on to perform in Octant and Audrey Marrs, who'd previously played with Bratmobile on one album, is now a successful film producer, having recently won an Academy Award for her work on the tremendous documentary film Inside Job.

The bands on this compilation really need no introduction as they are, or rather were, among the leading proponents of the mid 90's Northwest hardcore scene. Some people take umbrage at the use of the term 'hardcore' being used to describe bands outside of initial wave of hardcore during the early to mid 80's, but I can't think of a better term to describe the sounds that so many bands having been making, not only during the 90's, but all the way up to the present. To me, Nineironspitfire, Slowsidedown, Jough Dawn Baker and Botch and many, many other bands are just as worthy to a place on the hardcore mantle as classic first-wavers like Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. But, in the end, labeling music as this genre or that genre is just as pointless as it is annoying. You either dig something or you don't. And if you dig the furious, screamy, pulsating throb of any one of the four bands with a track on this compilation, chances are you'll be glad you downloaded this thing.

John Q Fascist / The Displacements - Split 7"

Today's download is another of the old mid-90's Seattle punk rock 7"s I rescued during a flood we had down in the basement last winter. This split between John Q Fascist and The Displacements was one of my favorites back when I first started getting into local punk rock. I have to admit that I strongly I prefer the John Q Fascist side of this split, most likely because of the last track, Berserker, which has an intro sample from the movie The Warriors and an angry chorus whose lyrics are "No more fucking Nazi cops! Seattle Police can suck my cock!" The Displacements side of the record isn't at all terrible, I just never really found it to be that memorable. I have no idea what the members of either of these bands went on to do afterwards nor do I know if The Displacements were even from the Northwest, as this record was the only time I ever heard of them. If you were lucky enough to see some Northwest punk shows back in the day, I'm sure you'll appreciate this nostalgic trip down memory lane. And even if you weren't around back then, here's a chance for you to experience some of the sonically preserved chaos.

Alright, you guys are in for a real treat with this one. Today's download is the Nervous System side of the split 7" they did with Murder. Not only is this a three track slab of steaming hot, bone rattling, screamy bass driven noise punk, it is among the most treasured and most listened to chunks of wax that I own. Olympia's Nervous System fucking owned and, having only gotten the chance to see them once, I treasure the vague memories I still have of seeing these guys live.

Mocket - Bionic Parts

Bionic Parts is Mocket's debut album, released on Punk In My Vitamins Records in 1996. If you checked out their previously posted sophomore album, Fanfare, you know to expect a refreshing blast of mid-90's new wave influenced indie rock. The first time around, however, Mocket had slightly more punk-ish tendencies. While I definitely enjoy all three of their records, I've always felt that the songs on Bionic Parts were delivered with a bit more attitude and urgency than anything they put out after it.

The Need were a new wave queer punk band from Olympia. Formed in the late 90's, the band was a duo consisting of Rachel Carns on vocals and drums and Radio Sloan on guitar and bass. I've heard them described as a cracked out no wave version of The B-52's and I think that's a pretty apt description. On their final record, The Need is Dead, they were joined by Joe Preston (Thrones, The Whip, Melvins) on sampler and synthesizer and Mike Lastra (Smegma), who also produced the record, on theremin.

Up until now, I've stuck to mostly posting indie, hardcore and screamo records. But, after coming across my small collection of old local punk rock 7"s in the basement, I've decided to start adding some of them into the mix.

The Degenerats were a street punk band from the greater Seattle area, perhaps remembered best for their song "Do Society a Favor, Die". I first saw them play at a show in the old Sorenson gymnasium in Woodinville with The Sheep, Schizoid, Flight 800, The Bloodclots & Bristle. Bristle were supposed to play last but ended up starting a riot in the parking lot which lead to headlights being smashed, bottles being tossed, the show being canceled and Sorenson refusing to put on any more concerts. The members of The Degenrats were Nils on vocals, Randy on guitar, Ryan on bass and Josh on drums. I'm not sure what any of the other guys have been up to, but I know that Nils went on to join Poxy, then Rabid Dogs and he now sings for The Greatest Hits.

Waxwing

I've been a fan of Rocky Votolato, the frontman of Waxwing, since 1995-ish when I saw him with the band Run Away Laughing. A year or so later he was fronting Lying On Loot. After Lying on Loot, and either after or during a stint drumming for the band Kentucky Pistol, came Waxwing... and there are not enough words in existence for me to be able to sufficiently express my love for Waxwing. Their shows, like their music, always contained an amazing blend of both beauty and chaos. Rocky's voice has this pained quality that made it so their mellow tunes came across with the same raw intensity as the harder tracks. Waxwing were beyond great and in my opinion they were one of the best bands of the whole late 90's/early 2000's Seattle music scene and I know many other people who feel the same way. Alright, I'm done gushing.

The Powers of Darkness Shall Rain Blood Upon This City For 500 Years are probably best remembered for having an extremely long band name. But, if you actually had a chance to see them perform live, you most likely remember them for their keyboard driven crushing noise grind and their wild and varying stage costumes. The members of the band were Travis Nakamura (drums), Cindy (keyboards), TJ (vocals), Thomas Cowgill (guitar, vocals).

Rat Cat Hogan - Part 1

"In the fall of 1997, I put an ad in The Rocket, a now defuct music publication in Seattle, Washington, looking for a drummer. Exactly one drummer answered that ad, the fugitive Iowan Robbie Skrocki. A few weeks later we were Rat Cat Hogan, and thus we've been ever since, more or less." - Herbert Bergel

Rat Cat Hogan was a two piece band composed of Herbert on guitar and vocals and Robbie on drums. The sound of their music is pretty lo fi and simple. The lyrics to their songs are mostly about mundane everyday things and read like short stories/diary entries, the vocal delivery is off, the guitar is angular but the drums sort of keep the whole thing together. This stuff definitely isn't for everyone. The two times I saw Rat Cat Hogan live they were heckled by assholes through their entire sets, but I've always found something charming in their quirky tunes.

The We're Bicoastal album features Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie playing piano on the fourth track and Sean Nelson formerly of The Long Winters & Harvey Danger singing background vocals on tracks five and seven.

Peter Parker - Semiautobiographical

Peter Parker's second album is an almost entirely different affair than their first record Migliore!, which was an impressive but fairly by-the-numbers take on 90's indie power pop. While they manage to retain some of their initial pop sensibilities, Semiautobiographical shows a band that had matured a great deal between albums. With a much darker and more unconventional edge, and a strong post punk vibe, this album is light years beyond what my brain was expecting for their follow up. I will go so far as to say that Semiautobiographical is Peter Parker's Pinkerton to Migliore's Blue and, coming from a huge Weezer fan, this is both a massive compliment and a heartfelt endorsement.

When I was in high school, The Blood Brothers were one of the more popular up and coming bands in the area. I had all their 7"s and must have seen them live a dozen or more times before they even put out an album. My love for them was strong enough that over the years, I not only continued to follow their career but I've also followed all of the side projects the guys have been in as well. From Head Wound City to Champagne Champagne, I've found something to like in all of these projects... except for one. For some reason the output of Neon Blonde, the duo of Johnny Whitney & Mark Gajadhar, has continued to baffle me over the years despite repeated listens. I will admit that I enjoy some electroclash music, Hell, I even like listening to Jaguar Love's Hologram Jams sometimes when I'm running on the treadmill. But when I listen to Neon Blonde my brain screams "DOES NOT COMPUTE". To me they just sound like a boring version of Soiled Doves with occasional synth and drum machine. That's not to say they're bad, I just don't really dig them. But you might...

Suffering & The Hideous Thieves - Real Panic Formed

Suffering and the Hideous Thieves were an ensemble cast lead by the mighty Jeff Suffering formerly of 90 lb Wuss & Raft of Dead Monkeys. Though I don't think they ever really broke up, Jeff joined the band for their "first show in three years" back in January,2009. The concert was a benefit for former Raft & 90 lb Wuss guitarist John Spalding who had passed away the previous November. Since that time, some of the members are apparently still operating as a band, though the new incarnation is now know simply as The Hideous Thieves and does not feature Jeff Suffering in the lineup. The album I'm posting here, Real Panic Formed, came out in 2002 and has always reminded me of a combination of Thoroughlev-era Raft of Dead Monkeys along with the the darker, more confessional material of Pedro the Lion.

Happy new year, everybody! (especially to my one follower & to the blogs that have linked me) I, for one, am very glad that 2009 is finally over. It was a great year for personal growth but it seemed pretty destructive & sad on a global scale. Seeing as it is now January of 2010, I am reminded that the blog's been around for almost a year. It's true, I didn't get a chance to post as often as I'd have liked to but I am pleased with the handful of responses I've gotten on some of the things I've chosen to post.

I never got a chance to see Seattle's Yeek Yak Air Force live, but after reading & hearing about them for a year or two and being intrigued by the various descriptions, I decided to buy their album & give 'em a listen. I must admit, based on what I'd read, I expected a more abrasive, noisy album, but the sounds on this disc were almost anything but. I don't listen to a lot of "math rock" but YYAF are a band I can really get into. They've always kind of reminded me of a mellow version of Jawbox or Sharks Keep Moving, with vocals that make me think of the Flaming Lips... this is probably a terrible description but I'm not very familiar with many bands that sound like this. So, you should probably just do yourself a favor & check out this album

Having mentioned my love of analog synthsizers in the last post, I thought I'd continue on that track with one of my favorite 90's new wave bands, Mocket. I first experienced their synthy punk pop genius when they played with Atari Teenage Riot & Add N to (X) at RKCNDY in the summer of 98 or 99. Mocket opened the show and they were great. Their drummer played without a bass drum, instead, he wore a shoe with a drum trigger placed in it, which, as a drummer who'd recently fallen in love with classic drum machines, I thought was really cool. As soon as Mocket finished playing, I went & bought a few 7"s from them, then I fought my way back to the front of the stage, ready to see Add N to (X) & get my second synth fix of the night.

This is a follow up to a post I did a while back on The Prom. I'd originally asked if anyone had access to a copy of their first album, as I'd lost my copy years ago. Well, no one had it but I ended up finding a copy, so here it is - In This Way They Found Me. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for a synth (blame it on my love for Gary Numan, The Rentals & 80's new wave in general) & that's probably why I like this album a little bit more than Under the Same Stars. It has the same quirky piano-laden ballads you'd expect if you've heard their 2nd album, but it's also got some great analog synths pulsing through a few of the tracks. Dig it

What is there to say about the almighty Doomsday 1999? They were a brutal, fierce, eardrum piercing grind/thrash band from Seattle. Members have/had played with the godforsaken Teen Cthulhu, the pulverizng Nervous System, the screeching Black Man White Man Dead Man, and the garishly costumed The Powers of Darkness Shall Reign Blood Upon This City For 500 Years.
Zack Carlson - Vocals + Travis Nakamura - Drums + Brandon Nakamura - Guitar/Vocals = 3 guys who have most likely experienced more hearing damage the any air traffic controller that ever lived.

Area 51 were a Seattle hardcore punk band with duel male and female screamy vocals. The members were Spencer Moody, Andrea Zollo, Dann Gallucci, Andy Sells, Derek Fudesco & Sterling Callier. Peter Parker were (perhaps still are?) a glorious power pop trio that rocked my fuckin' socks off back in high school. The band consisted of Matt Paker on guitar/vocals, Mona Parker played bass/sang & Steve Parker (aka Steve the Producer) played drums. I first saw them play with Harvey Danger & Rat Cat Hogan somewhere in Olympia back in highschool & they blew me away with their rockin' pop sensibilities. I had actually met the members of the band before I ever heard them, a few of my friends in school were big fans of theirs & had befriended them & one year I ended up eating a St. Patricks Day feast of corned beef & cabbage with them at someone's house. I went and saw them play later that year & my girlfriend at the time bought a copy of this cd, their first album, at the show. Later, she made me a tape with this album on one side & studio versions of the set list from the Tori Amos show she dragged me to later that summer on the other. Needless to say, Migliore is the only side I ever listened to. I hadn't heard this album in around 8 years but recently tracked down a copy on cd. I was surprised to find that I remebered the words to most of the songs, which to me is an acknowledgement to how excellent & catchy this album really is.

Something like six months after recording this & with some minor personnel changes they became the Murder City Devils, and the rest is history...

The Prom haven't made a peep in quite a few years so it's pretty safe to assume that they are no longer active. Their first record, had a bit more of a synth-pop/indie feel to it, the album was called 'In This Way They Found Me' and was released in 2000 on Portland-based Panther Fact Records. Their second record, 'Under the Same Stars' was a much more ballad filled, piano-driven affair. It came out in 2002 on Barsuk records.

USS Horsewhip were an amazing band from Bellingham. After high school, a lot of my friends moved to Bellingham to go to Western (Washinton University). One of the guys I know started hosting shows at the house he and a few others were renting.He had always had a great taste in music so, one weekend, a small group of us went up to see one of the shows. I have to admit that, initially, I was pretty unimpressed with the bands playing in living room, it was the same uninspired, boring indie stuff I usually avoid like the plague, so I went upstairs to smoke some weed (this is Bellingham I'm talking about, after all - not only is it a college town but it's also like an hour's drive from Vancouver BC). I was probably up there smoking for over an hour when, after a lull in the noise coming from below, this incredible roar tore through the house - the floors started throbbing & the windows began to shake like a Parkinson's patient. I set the bong down & descended the stairs to investigate this furious assault on my senses & ended up walking into the beginning of a set by USS Horsewhip. I stood, transfixed & totally loving every minute of it. At the time, I really hadn't listened to a lot of the local stuff I'd grown up loving for a couple years (Botch, Blood Brothers, Karp, etc..). I was preoccupied with my newfound love for funk, soul, reggae & r&b - but something about the Horsewhip grabbed me by the balls & reconnected me with a type of music I thought I was over & I've been grateful for that every day since.
If you dig these guys, you should check out the bands they formed afterwards: Police Teeth & Black Breath. Both bands are on myspace & at least one of them still have USS Horsewhip records available for sale.

Jough Dawn Baker

Soiled Doves

Soiled Doves is the name that The Vogue started going by after their keyboardist left the band (see earlier post: The Vogue). Soiled Doves broke up in 2001, their album "Soiled Life" came out posthumously on GSL in 2003. The picture above is taken from the Soiled Doves 7" which contains two tracks from the aforementioned album. As Johnny Whitney began to focus more on Blood Brothers, Soiled Doves mutated into the band The Chromatics, who then morphed into Shoplifting.

The Mukilteo Fairies are of often mislabeled as 'punk' but were basically a screamy grindcore band. They are probably most famous for their hilarious name (a play on the name of a local ferry line) & for the bands that the members went on to play in. The Whip

The Whip were: Jared Warren - bass and vocals. Joe Preston - guitar and vocals. Scott Jernigan - drums. Scott & Jared were 2/3 of the seminal northwest hardcore band Karp & Joe was a former member of The Melvins & Thrones. So, needless to say - The Whip are some heavy, hard hitting bastards & it's very sad that their 7" stands as their only output available. Just as they started making some serious noise around town & getting written up in The Stranger for their ferocious live shows, The Whip ended when drummer Scott Jernigan was killed in a boating accident on June 10, 2003. Musically, the Whip picked up the hardcore torch right where Karp left off, so if you're a Karp fan, or a fan of anything heavy, you'll probably dig the Whip. So, here is their self titled 7" and, for some bonus eardrum hammering pleasure, I've included a decent quality bootleg set that I came across on soulseek as well.

Vade was a band that featured future-Blood Brothers, Johnny Whitney, & future Gossip member Hannah Blilie. (I don't know who else was in the band so please send me some info if you've got it). I got to see them once, when I was 12 or 13 years old, either with Lying on Loot or Run Away Laughing. I remember thinking they were very cool because all the members were only around 15/16 years old at the time & they had a girl in the band, which was pretty rare in the high school age band scene in the area at the time. In the mid nineties, Vade, along with Jough Dawn Baker & Karp, were among my favorite screamo/hardcore bands. Vade released a split 12" with Jough Dawn Baker, a 7" and a demo cassette. Johnny & Hannah also played together in the bands The Vogue & Soiled Doves a few years after Vade (see earlier post - The Vogue).

Drowning In Lethe

Drowning in Lethe was an indie/screamo band from the greater Seattle Washington area. They released a CD-R in 2001 (Self-released), a Self-Titled 7” and a split 7” with Deadseraphim. Both official releases were on Pictora Pilota and were released in 2002. A 2003 recording for a full-length album, Alpine Lakes Wilderness, exists, but remains unreleased. Lethe broke up in 2004. All the guys, sans Nick, went to Bothell High School (Bothell,WA) and could be seen daily drinking lots of Surge, hanging out & touching each other inappropriately in the halls. Easy to spot, even at a distance, the boys stood out, usually dressed in their finest tight band T-shirts, tight denim jeans and tight jean jackets. They also had really greasy hair. They worshiped bands like Botch & the Locust and played shows with the Blood Brothers and many other bands who were hip & active at the time. Members have also played in the following bands: Vats of Blood, Murdered in Mexico, Skyline Divide, Mercy House Youth, Fires to the East, The Assailant, Elba, Navigator vs Navigator. These days the guys are either hippies or they're dead.

The Vogue are most famous for being a side project of members of The Blood Brothers and featured Adam Miller, Hannah Billie, Johnny Whitney, Casey Wescott and Devin Welch. Johnny Whitney & Devin Welch were both in Blood Brothers - though Devin left Blood Brothers before their first album came out. Johnny & Hannah Blilie had previously played together in the awesome hardcore/screamo band Vade. Hannah is also the twin sister of Jordan Blilie, the other vocalist in Blood Brothers. The Vogue released a self titled 7" and an album called As Brass & Satin (both on Made In Mexico Records) before eventually becoming the band Soiled Doves after the departure of their keyboard player. Soiled Doves broke up in 2001, their album Soiled Life came out two years later on GSL. Since then, Devin Welch & Hannah Blilie played together in the band Shoplifting, Hannah also now drums for the band The Gossip. Devin is currently in the band Past Lives with Jordan Blilie, Mark Gajadhar & Morgan Hederson, all ex members of Blood Brothers. Johnny Whitney is currently in the band Jaguar Love with Cody from Blood Brothers & Jay from Pretty Girls Make Graves

Raft of Dead Monkeys

"Who the hell are Raft of Dead Monkeys?" That's the reaction you're most likely to get if you ask a record store employee or damn near anyone about this band. Sure, they've got a page on Wikipedia... but these guys are a mostly-forgotten gem from the late 90's & early 2000's. The band consisted predominantly of members from 90 Pound Wuss, Roadside Monument and Suffering & the Hideous Thieves. They released an e.p. called DBM on Make Believe Recordings in 1999, an album by the name of Thoroughlev on Burnout Records in 2001 & had one song on the 'Is It... Dead?' Seattle hardcore compilation which was released by Crash Rawk, rocknroleplay & Sub Poop records in the year of our lord 2001. They also had an unreleased album called "Joey the Pigfucker" which I believe (based on the liner notes inside of DBM) was originally going to be called "Hot Pants College" - though a song by that name appears on Joey the Pigfucker. Raft basically had two different musical periods: DBM era Raft was more punk, while Thoroughlev was a bit more like Roadside Monument or even Sharks Keep Moving, kind of indie/math rock & not quite as abrasive. Joey the Pigfucker shows them merging the two sounds. I just learned that John Spalding, who played in both Raft of Dead Monkeys & 90 Pound Wuss, passed away on November 23, 2008 from cancer. There is a fund set up in his name at Bank of America. It is "John D Spalding Medical Fund" you can go in to any Bank of America and make a deposit. All funds will go to the family to help pay expenses.
